Cleaning
Traditional cleaning
To be done properly, rug cleaning must follow four essential steps: beating, washing, wringing, and drying. Then, if necessary, reshaping the wool and silk. Some rugs may require an additional step to set the colour.
The above procedures do not apply to delicate rugs, which are treated like tapestries with the utmost care. Tapis Scheherazade has a recognized expertise in this field.

The 4 steps
to proper rug cleaning
1– Beating: whether done by hand or with machines, beating involves removing dust that has become embedded and solidified at the base of the rug fibers. The specialist first checks the rug's resistance to choose the best beating method.
2– Washing: we begin with cleaning the back of the rug, which brings all the dirt to the surface, then we proceed with washing the front with plenty of water. Natural, non‑toxic products are added, the choice of which depends on the rug's composition.
3– Wringing: with a special machine, shaped like a piston to avoid folding the rug, the wringing process removes most of the water as quickly as possible, preventing it from stagnating too long in the rug.
4– Drying: depending on the season, drying takes place in a heated room or under the sun. Water is very harmful to colour stability and to the strength of the cotton warp and weft. When it comes to rugs, the art of washing is above all the art of drying.
